Country Antiques is situated in the hub of Auckland's antique centre. There is almost always parking at the door and is complemented by five quality and substantial dealers within easy walking distance. After hours enquiries are welcome and viewing is normally possible although the shop is congested out of normal hours. For 30 years Country Antiques' emphasis was almost exclusively antique pine and country furniture.
Antiques-their definition- is objects of at least 100 years of age.
They also pursue decorative accessories which may be antique but the emphasis is on decorative versatility and appeal so there is no compunction in stocking vintage, reproduction and new items in this area.
The dictum, however, is honesty and integrity in the description of anything stocked so a reproduction will never knowingly be misrepresented.
Currently, in keeping with contemporary trends and themes, their stock has now become much more eclectic. Although the focus is still on antique, country, rustic and primitive furniture, - vintage, mid-century, industrial and retro items are also offered.
In essence, the emphasis is on what could best be defined as vernacular furniture; specimens that would have had a common feel in their own time and speak of the comfortable, domestic realities of their own era. Country Antiques' see their stock as a commentary on the social history of middle society. Highly formal and classical furniture is left to other specialty dealers although you will normally find a classic English mahogany bow front chest of drawers in stock at remarkable value.
They eschew boredom. The intent is that the stock and shop should be as vibrant as practicable creating an atmosphere that is interesting, fresh, colourful, and even humorous –or at least, fun.
The intent is for a shop with an ambience of uncomplicated, casual ease while still unique and varied and appealing to the demands of the sophisticated decorator. Country Antiques' approach is determinedly relaxed and informal. You will never be greeted by, ‘Can I help you.’ The enterprise is also the proprietors' lifestyle so if you appreciate the shop, they will be sympathetic to your interests and will oblige with service, advice and assistance wherever it is practical.
